What's New on Shrog?

So Far... 01 August 2000

Well, this is it! "Shrog's Visual Basic Stuff" is now officially live. There was no big party, no fireworks, or anything like that, it was just a deadline for me to have certain things up and running by a certain date.

And even though I did not achieve absolutely everything that I wanted to by this time, I feel that I have done enough to call this site "live". There should be no more pages that say "Under Construction", and each section should contain at least some useful information.

General
All counters were reset to zero. Well, there is only the one counter on the menu frame on the left, so if you are not using frames it doesn't even count. Also, I set the counter to zero at midnight my time, which is about 7 hours before American Central Time.

Each page now contains a Google Search box, for searching the web. I've been using Google for more than a year now, and I am still amazed at its efficiency..

How To's
The following new How To items have been added since last week: Tutorials
The Tutorials Page has links to three first class items: Standards
On the Standards Page, the main heading of "Naming Standards" has been added, and under that, "General" naming standards and "Control" naming standards. Every month a new installment of standards will be published.

Articles
The Articles Page has it's first entry: The Sequence of events. This article takes a look at the events that occur when certain things happen to a form, like loading, clicking, double-clicking and shutting down.

Links
New VB Link:
GUI Visual Basic Programming Standards
GUI VB Standards
These are the Visual Basic Coding Standards for the company called GUI Computing Pty Ltd, as opposed to standards about GUI. If you search the web for Visual Basic coding standards, you will find many sites that mention standards, or that list a few standards, but none of them actually have a complete set of standards that you can take and use, except for this one. It's written in a friendly and approachable manner, and is the most complete list of standards available on the web.

New Link to Stuff:
Soda Play
Soda Constructor
Were you planning to get any work done this week? Forget it. Go to this site and create your own walking, dancing, crawling or wriggling creature.
Warning! sodaconstructor can seriously damage your productivity!

About Shrog
A simple little page that explains why I'm doing this.

And that's what's new on Shrog today.

What's New Archive

18 July 2000

The official launch date for this site is Tuesday, 1 August 2000. But instead of uploading everything on the day, I decided to build it up piece by piece, for all to criticize. The following pieces are available so far:

General
General infrastructure, pages and navigation is up and running for the most part. Pages load up correctly with and without frames, and as far as I can tell, there aren't any bad links. If you come across any errors or bugs, or you have a suggestion, please let me know at feedback@shrog.iwarp.com.

How To's
The How To Page has been created, and there are actually items on it!
OK, it's not much, but it is my intention to have at least 30 items on there by launch date. So far you can find out how to:
Save a picture to a file and
Tell if your app is running in Development Environment or as a compiled EXE.
Q & A Forum
The Question and Answer Forum is operational. I have decided that collaboration is better than split resources, so I am abandoning my lonely little Q&A Forum and joining the established Earthweb Forum. Rod Stephens, owner of the VB-Helper site, hosts this forum. I see that after many years and several format changes, Rod is still answering questions there, and that's gotta count for something! So my Q&A link now points to discussions.earthweb.com. The forum will open in a new browser window.

Links
My main Links Page has several links on it already. It will take me a while to add all the ones I would like to. I will try to add at least one per week. If you would like me to link to your site, let me know.

I also have a Link To Me page, with graphics and HTML code for anybody who wants to link back to me (har har). If you do link to me, please let me know, because it's always cool to see my links on other people's sites. :o)

My Links to Stuff! page is unfortunately not priority till after launch date, so there's nothing there just yet... unless you're willing to wait a minute for that strange animated gif to load up... Yes, that's me :-)

Contacts
The Contacts Page is finally done. All the e-mail addresses should work now. I had a few problems with mail bouncing, but that should be sorted out now. But just in case you do have a problem with one of the "iwarp" e-mail addresses, please let me know by sending a message to Shrog@Techemail.com. It's on another server, so even if iwarp is down, techemail will be up.

The subscription to the newsletter works. I will try to send out a weekly newsletter with hints, tips and updates, but I suspect that it will be less frequent to start off with.

My guestbook... It's not a great guestbook, and guestbooks in general are scoffed at, but this is the quickest way to give me feedback - just say "Seen your site and I think it sucks!" or "I like what you did with the whatsits in the thingamies." Or just say that you were here...
